Calcaneus – Anatomy Atlas

Overview

Surfaces and landmarks of the calcaneus The calcaneus seen from a lateral, superior and posterior perspective. At the top we see a lateral view of the calcaneus, where you can see the posterior, middle and anterior talar articular surfaces. Moving anteriorly, we can also spot the articular surface for cuboid bone. On the bottom right is the superior view, with a visual of some bony landmarks such as the calcaneal sulcus, a deep groove lying between the posterior and middle talar articular surfaces. Medial to the sulcus is the sustentaculum tali, which on its inferior surface carries the groove for the tendon of flexor hallucis longus. The lateral surface of the calcaneus contains an oblique ridge, the fibular trochlea. The bottom left image shows the posterior aspect of the calcaneus and the prominent calcaneal tuberosity, containing a medial and lateral process that serve as attachment points for various structures.
