Muscles of the foot – Anatomy Atlas

Overview

Dorsal and plantar view of the muscles of the foot In this illustration, you will find all of the intrinsic muscles of the foot. According to their location, they are divided into four distinct groups: three groups of muscles of the sole of the foot (central, medial and lateral) and dorsal muscles. The central compartment is made up of flexor digitorum brevis, quadratus plantae, lumbrical muscles, plantar interossei muscles and dorsal interossei muscles. The lateral compartment includes the abductor digiti minimi, flexor digiti minimi brevis and opponens digiti minimi muscles. The medial compartment is made up of abductor hallucis, adductor hallucis and flexor hallucis brevis muscles. Lastly, the dorsal muscles (shown in the bottom right image) are the extensor digitorum muscle and extensor hallucis brevis muscle.
