Overview of the muscles of the leg On the left image, the triceps surae muscle is removed in order to reveal the locations and relations of the plantaris muscle and the muscles that belong to the deep part of the posterior compartment of the leg. On the right image, the tibialis anterior muscle is removed, revealing the lateral leg muscles, as well as the anterior leg muscles that lie beneath it.
